William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564, and his plays are still performed and read more than 400 years after his death.
Shakespeare's father was a successful tradesman and his mother was the daughter of a landowner. Shakespeare received a good education and was fluent in Latin and Greek. He married Anne Hathaway when he was 18, and the couple had three children.
